Adhiratha was a charioteer and the adoptive father of Karna, one of the key characters in the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata. Adhiratha found Karna as a baby floating in a basket on the river and raised him as his own son, despite Karna not being of his own blood.
Adhiratha was a charioteer of Bhishma Pitamah, the grand father of the Kauravas and Pandavas, and Karna was trained in the art of warfare and chariot driving by Adhiratha and his wife, Radha. Karna went on to become a legendary warrior and was a close friend of Duryodhana, the leader of the Kauravas.
Despite being adopted, Karna was always grateful to Adhiratha and considered him to be his true father. He was also deeply devoted to his foster mother, Radha, and always honored her memory.
In the great battle of Kurukshetra, Karna fought on the side of the Kauravas against the Pandavas and was ultimately killed. Adhiratha and Radha grieved deeply for the loss of their son and the grief was compounded by the fact that Karna had died fighting against the Pandavas, who were related to him by blood.
Adhiratha's character serves as a reminder of the importance of love, compassion, and adoption in Hindu mythology, and his role as the foster father of Karna is considered to be a significant one in the epic.
