James Augustus Hicky is considered the "Father of Indian Journalism" for his establishment of the first Indian newspaper, "The Bengal Gazette" also known as "Hicky's Gazette" in 1780.

Hicky, an Irishman, started "The Bengal Gazette" as a weekly newspaper in Calcutta (now Kolkata), British India. The newspaper was known for its bold and critical reporting on the British East India Company and its policies, which eventually led to Hicky's imprisonment. The Bengal Gazette was the first newspaper in India to be published in English and was the first newspaper to be printed using the movable type printing press.

Although Hicky's Gazette only ran for two years, it set the precedent for a free press in India and laid the foundation for the development of the Indian newspaper industry.
